Exercise #1 You have often passed a particular house (or first floor apartment) as you walk to the train or drive home . from work. This particular evening it is just past dusk so that there is still a little deep blue color to the sky, but all the lights are on in the house/apartment/place you notice. Something makes you stop and look. Suddenly, in one of the windows, you see.... Exercise #2 You have often passed a particular house (or first floor apartment) as you walk to the train or drive home from work. This particular evening it is just past dusk so that there is still a little deep blue color to the sky, but all the lights are on in the house/apartment/place you notice. Something makes you stop and look. Looking in the window, you can see rooms and pictures on the wall, furniture. It seems strangely family. Suddenly you are in the room, and it is a room you have been in so many times.... Exercise #3 You have often passed a particular house or apartment as you walk to the train or drive home from work. This particular evening it is just past dusk so that there is still a little deep blue color to the sky, but lights are on in the house/apartment/place. Something makes you stop and look. It reminds you of Magritte’s famous painting, Empire of Light The reversal of dark and light sends you into a reverie, and you remember.... Write in a different place: Take your laptop or your yellow legal pad out on the back porch Exercise #4 Everyone has a first day of school story, or first day at a new school, or first day at college. Write yours in whatever way it comes to you. Now write it again from different point of view-- yourself as it was happening, your mother, from the point of view of the teacher looking out at your class’s shining first grade faces, whatever, Of course, the change is likely to make it into fiction-- that is to say, if you are imagining someone else’s mental landscape, you are writing fiction.. Exercise #5 A character or yourself enters a crowded room. Write it twice, once with a fairly objective description of what is there, then again with the person under some kind of stress— confused by the voices, trying to find an important person in the room

Exercise #4 By the time August came around I was always looking forward to going back to school. I loved summer vacation as much as the next kid, but by the end of August, I was ready. By that point I had climbed every tree in the neighborhood, played hide-and-go-seek so many times that there were no more good hiding places, went swimming so often I was tired of water and watched all of my favorite movies at least three times. I was ready to learn new things. I was ready to see friends again. But most of all, I was ready to show off all of my great new supplies from our back-to-school shopping trips. I remember one year in particular: for the first day of school my mom bought me a blue dress with matching hair clips. I also had a blue and green matching pencil case and binder set, but my absolute favorite thing was my lunch box. It was one of those great tin ones that are harder to find nowadays, and my mom and I had decorated it ourselves. We painted flowers and rainbows, and my mom wrote my name in script, and I knew, without a doubt, that I had the best lunch box in the whole school. I realize that I loved that lunch box so much because I had created it with my mom. That's why I always try to do fun things with my boys, whether it's creating origami paper airplanes, going birdwatching with them, watching them sail or taking them to an interactive museum. I believe that it's the memories that are formed by doing active things together that are the most important. |
